I was thinking about words and signs when I found a tree, fallen in the woods. The bark peeled off the trunk and a convoluted, page-like surface was revealed. It was filled with grooves that cannot help but resemble writing. What story has the tree recorded?
Nature has a language – everything we see is a word. The challenge is to take up these found words without skewing their meaning beyond recognition and to put them together into sentences that speak. Nature actively works in creating itself, in re-fashioning its many faces – big and small, visible and hidden. She is not mute, but she does require an interpreter.
