April 27, 2023_Art & AI

by Danielle Brown

Editors note: Here you have apparently divergent bits of a creative's life. Images of art, and image as art made by a human about a world that seems, at times, barely human, or perhaps grudgingly so. Then, there's the prompts the artist made to our newest AI friend, Chat-GPT. The author makes clear the poetry it makes is awful, but it also has a much more salient effect on the artist. The art Brown makes, some of which is presented here, is not awful. That's good, and since it is unlikely that AI are abandoning our planet any time soon, coming to grips with our limits and capacities to utilize this new way of visioning, seems wise. Learning how to see "story" or have an "experience" in the midst of a whirl of unrelated content, that's human, and not a talent of AI. What AI can do is offer us new content, new ideas, new (non-human) takes on what words convey. That's good. We can treat it like a game: what could this possibly mean? Here is an opening move.
